Jeff's Handiwork

Some examples of technical handiwork I've done

For $150 we could have bought an adaptor from Microchip. Instead I built my own. The orientation label is for how to place it in the programmer.

Here's the backside. Notice the labels documenting what I'd done. They'll come in handy later.

Same kludge adaptor with a difference. I can now stretch a cable from the programmer (via the new connector) to the target kludge and burn the chip without having to remove and replace it twice.

Had to re-route a couple wires, but the connector and socket are wired in parallel.

I honestly don't remember what this was for, but it was obviously very clever or I wouldn't have taken a picture. :)

Here's the other end of that cable. How to install a better processor with a different form factor? Enormous kludge! The shop guys made the clamp to my specifications.

Later, the processor we're really going to use in a slightly better form factor. Still trying to fit a 28-pin DIP into an 18-pin socket, though.

Well, heck, I had all those extra I/O pins. Why not use some for diagnostics?

But even that wasn't good enough, we needed it to fit into the case. This is a TSOP part. Next time -- if there is a next time -- I'll use SOIC. This was very tedious and fiddly.
